Who Am I?
My name is Matthew Ellis and I’m a writer/academic/artist from Portland, OR. I received my PhD in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University in 2022 and today study media, culture, and history from the left. Before my scholarly career, I spent time as a touring artist with my post/metal/rock band A Hope For Home (Facedown Records) from 2006-2011, and then covered the 2013-2017 Seattle Mariners for Vox’s SB Nation at Lookout Landing, a baseball blog with experimental pretentions during social media’s peak ZIRP years. My work today is a product of all these experiences, and so you’ll see me write on everything from the politics of the American right to periodization in art history, film theory and philosophy, news coverage and the political economy of media industries.
As of now nothing is paywalled (although I don’t refuse any generosity); signing up rather ensures we can stay in contact without routing everything through the Muskified internet. But of course you can still follow me on X and Bluesky if you must. I have a personal website I don’t update enough, but every week I appear on a podcast talking about movies with my friend Corbin, which you can listen to here. Please don’t email my wife!!!!
